Aljezur

The town of Aljezur is idyllically located in a green valley near the border of north-west Algarve. It’s perfect for those looking to get up close and personal with nature with a little hiking or cycling, but would equally suit those looking for secluded beaches and gorgeous sea views. Aljezur truly is an ideal location for a relaxing escape.

Aljezur Castle

Although this 10th century castle now lays in ruins, it still casts a wonderful silhouette over Aljezur. It also provides incredible view back over the town (unsurprisingly) it was built to protect. Alijezur Castle played a major role in defending the region all the way up until the 18th Century, but today serves as major attraction.

Beaches

Although Aljezur is not on the coast, there are a number of amazing beaches are just a few minutes’ drive away.

One of the most popular has to be the Praia de Monte Clérigo. Located just a 10 minute drive from Aljezur, the bay is deep and sandyand is a popular place for families and surfers. It’s also a top spot for fishing. The beach is supervised during the summer, has parking, toilet facilities and some cafés and restaurants to keep you refreshed throughout the day.

Another top beach in the Aljezur area is the Praia da Bordeira: a long sandy stretch that’s ideal for waterports and activities, like kite surfing. Bordeira is backed by big sand dunes and has a lovely lagoon where children can play safely. The one downside is that there are no amenities on the beach, though it is supervised during the summer season – of course, this means the beach is usually quieter than most, making it great for those looking for some a little more secluded.

Praia do Amado and Praia da Arrifana are the most popular surf beaches along the west coast of Portugal, and bith play host to several surf competitions each year. Both are backed by beautiful cliffs, which serves as perfect vantage points to watch the sunset. So, even if surfing is not your thing, you will enjoy the fantastic views from the top of the cliffs. Both beaches are supervised during the summer season.

Food

Like most of the Algarve, Aljezur is a foodie’s paradise, offering a rich variety of fresh fish and seafood. Don’t worry if your tastes are a little less aquatic, more meaty favourites include rabbit and wild boar, which are popular during hunting season. You’ll typically find dishes accompanied by sweet potatoes and beans and all washed down by the local Aljezur wine, which is a must with every meal.
