Admire the array of colorful flowers and trimmed hedges and visit the dark room’s camera obscura for a real-time image of the city.

The Alcázar Gardens is a majestic complex consisting of a palace and park of Moorish design and origin. It contains walls, towers and the city’s only remaining mosque. Inspect the intricate architecture for a glimpse into the ingenuity of the Moors.

Stroll through the elegant, preserved colonnade of the palace built during the 11th and 12th centuries. The moat that once protected the structure was filled in the 1700s, leaving a pleasant grassy space. Note that several features survive from a previous incarnation of the palace, including arched doors and the Arabian baths. See the old changing rooms of the bath area and examine the intricate heating system of the hot room.

Climb to the dark room of the Villavicencio Palace Tower for a panoramic vista of the city. Docents explain the history of the tower and the dark room’s mechanism, which uses mirrors and lenses to create authentic real-time images of the city. Browse the displays in the exhibits in this tower about dark rooms and the most significant landmarks in Jerez de la Frontera.

Attend one of the cultural events that are held in the gardens. Wander along the paths of the landscape gardens and appreciate the greenery and serenity. The park contains elegant water features and an olive oil press. Bring your children to play in these gardens and pick figs from the trees.

There is a fee to enter the gardens. Discounts are offered for kids, seniors and students. The complex opens daily from morning until early evening, closing a little earlier in winter. The dark room incurs an additional fee.

Alcázar Gardens in the Alcázar de Jerez complex is a little west of the center of Jerez de la Frontera. Arrive at the Jerez Railway Station and walk west for about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to reach it. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Teatro Villamarta, the Plaza Arenal and the Jerez Cathedral.
